Five Languages Helped Make August a Standout Month for Indian Cinema

August 2026 became India’s biggest box office month of the year. Its ten highest-grossing films came from five languages.

The biggest film of August was Hanuman Ansh. But the story of the month does not end with one title. Telugu, Malayalam, Tamil, and Kannada films also appeared alongside Hindi releases in the box office top ten.

According to Ormax Media, films released in August are estimated to gross ₹1,768 crore in India. That made it the strongest month of 2026 so far and the third highest-grossing month on record. The figure includes projected collections for August films that were still playing when the report was published.

What was drawing people to cinemas?

The top ten included three Hindi films, two Telugu films, two Malayalam films, two Tamil films and one Kannada film. Hanuman Ansh led the month, while Toxic and Irumudi were also among its major contributors.

The mix matters because a national box office total can hide how many different films brought people through cinema doors. August’s result came from releases across several film industries, each reaching its own audience.

The Malayalam film Bethlehem Kudumba Unit shows how a release can extend beyond its original language. Ormax estimated its domestic gross at ₹185 crore in the August report. Its Tamil and Telugu versions arrived in September, and their collections were not part of that figure.

Ormax said those additional versions could take the film past the domestic record for a Malayalam film across all language versions. What began as one of August’s Malayalam releases could therefore have a longer box office story.

For Screenox Media, that range of films matters at the cinema itself. Its PVR INOX lobby screens are seen before audiences enter their shows. When people arrive for films in different languages, brands have an opportunity to make the message they see in the lobby relevant to the films that brought them there.
