The Cafés We Grew Up In Have Grown Up Too
One café, several kinds of day
A familiar café can surprise you.
The last time you came, your table was crowded with college friends. Today, someone is taking a work call there. Across the room, two people are meeting for the first time. A family has stopped in before heading home.
The café is still a place to meet. What counts as a café visit has grown with the people who make one.
That is the story of Café Coffee Day and Barista in India today. These are names many people have known for years, but the lives happening inside their cafés belong firmly to 2026.
A friend suggests coffee because you have not met in months. A colleague suggests the same place for a discussion between appointments. Someone else walks in alone, hoping to finish a task away from home.
Each person needs something different from the room.
A study published in 2025 examined social media posts about 100 urban cafés across India. It found cafés being used for activities including solo study, group meetups and informal business meetings. Its researchers also found that practical details, such as accessible locations and flexible seating, mattered alongside atmosphere. idajournal.com
That is easy to recognise at a café table. Friends need space to settle in together. Someone working wants a comfortable seat and a place for their laptop. Two people catching up want to hear each other talk. A good café makes room for those visits to happen at the same time.
Why familiar names still matter
India has more café choices now. World Coffee Portal counted 5,339 branded coffee shop outlets in its 2025 study of the Indian market. worldcoffeeportal.com
In that crowded landscape, a familiar name remains useful. You can suggest CCD or Barista without having to explain the kind of place you mean. The other person knows where they are going, and the plan is made.
These brands are also very much part of the present. Coffee Day reported 412 operational CCD cafés across 148 cities for the financial year ending March 2026. FinancialFilings
Those numbers describe a network. They cannot describe what happens at any particular table. That might be a brief stop for a drink, an hour alone or a conversation that continues long after the cups are empty.
The cup has changed. So has the conversation.
Coffee choices have widened, and people have more ways to enjoy coffee at home. Cafés still give them a reason to go out.
Coffee Day’s 2026 annual report describes Indian cafés as spaces used for work, meetings and leisure. It also notes growing interest in specialty coffee and cold brews. These are the company’s observations about the market, but they reflect a simple change in the café visit: people arrive with different plans and different expectations of what they might order. A café can be where you try something new. It can also be where you order the drink you have chosen for years. Both customers may be sitting in the same room.
The person you once met after college might now be the friend you manage to see between busy workweeks. You might choose a café for a meeting today and return on Sunday with no agenda at all.
What makes us return?
A café has to be convenient enough to visit. To become a favourite, it has to be a place people enjoy spending time.
In World Coffee Portal’s 2025 survey of 4,013 Indian coffee shop consumers, 66 percent said coffee beverages in coffee shops generally offered good value for money. That finding speaks to the drink. The experience of returning also depends on the room around it and what a visitor came there to do. worldcoffeeportal.com
Sometimes you return because the location works for everyone. Sometimes you know there is a table where you like to sit. And sometimes the message “Meet at the usual place?” is enough to make an ordinary day more interesting.
The next visit
The cafés we grew up in have not stood still. The people at their tables have changed, their reasons for visiting have multiplied and coffee itself offers more choices.
Yet the simplest plan remains a good one: “Let’s meet for coffee.”
Screenox Media’s digital screens inside select Café Coffee Day and Barista cafés give brands a presence during those visits, in familiar places where people choose to spend their time.
